AURORA, ILLINOIS – State Senator Linda Holmes (D-Aurora) attended the “Going behind bars for good” event hosted by Family Focus on Saturday afternoon. The event, which was hosted at East Aurora High School, was aimed at helping Family Focus get the Latino vote out in Aurora. The New Americans Democracy Project is a “non-partisan voter registration and voter turn-out campaign” aimed at “targeting infrequent voters and registering new citizens to vote”.
Volunteers for the event reported to East Aurora High School to be “arrested” at noon sharp. Senator Holmes joined a group of other community advocates and leaders who were put “behind bars” until they were able to raise the money to bail themselves out. Friends, family, and supporters could donate through the Family Focus website, or give their donations directly to the warden, but these leaders remained locked up until they could raise their $500 bail – their donation to the organization.
Despite high temperatures and strong winds, Senator Holmes spent some time behind bars, talking to other local leaders and members of the community.
“I've always been a strong supporter of Family Focus and an advocate for the community. Family Focus does a tremendous job in registering new voters, and really pushing hard to get the Latino vote out in the Aurora area.When I was presented with the opportunity to raise some money for the group – while having fun at the same time, I couldn't pass it up”, said Senator Holmes after the event was over.
